Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become evident that the world supply of medical/surgical masks is inadequate. We searched for creative ways to reduce their use finding that washable well-fitting cotton masks were a sustainable alternative. As a result we began to distribute cloth masks to all patients entering the hospital: an ER visit, a dialysis treatment, or an out patient hospital visit. These masks are recuperated and washed to be reused.
The goal of universal mask use is to reduce the transmission of droplets in our environment. In patients with COVID-19, these droplets contain the virus. Any reduction in droplet spread will reduce the virus' transmission.
